      Topic 1: Family

The person in my family I really like and also love is my mother. She is a very special person and I cannot imagine what I would be without her.

Physically, my mother is petite. She is only about 5 feet tall and weighs about 110 pounds. She has fine, black hair and a fair complexion. One thing people often notice is that my mother always takes pride in her appearance. Even now, at the age of 80, my mother is a well dressed, well-groomed and elegant woman, with her fine choice of clothes and matching accessories, jewelry and shoes.

Intellectually, my mother always loves learning. Even after her busy day, she won't go to bed without reading the newspaper. She was one of the few members of her family that completed university. She also has many creative and cultural interests such as literature, music, and dance. Through her own enjoyment, she passed on this love of culture to all her children, including me.

Emotionally, my mother has a heart of gold. All her life, she has been ready, willing and able to help anyone who needs anything, with a smile on her face. She is of the old school - she remembers to wish friends and relatives on their birthdays and anniversaries, she attends their weddings, dinners, and parties, and she visits them when they're hurt, unwell or in mourning.

In fact, my mother has always been a kind soul and people of all ages love her as soon as they meet her. I think this is because she is good-hearted from her core, and her authenticity is what everyone relates to. She has taught me the meaning of being compassionate, loving, kind, helpful, supportive and so much more. In fact, thanks to the unconditional love of both my wonderful parents, I feel I've been truly blessed in this lifetime.

      Topic 2: Course

"Describe a course you took in your college or university". You should say:

      • What it was
      • When you took it
      • What you learned from this course
      • And explain why you took this course.

"Book Keeping & Banking" was one of the most interesting courses I took in my university level and I thoroughly enjoyed this course. In fact, I learned many new concepts and theory from this course that it helped me a lot throughout the remaining semesters. This was a mandatory course in the 3rd semester in my Bachelor of Business Administration studies and the courses on this subject lasted for four months. I was so interested in this course that later on, I took three other courses in different semesters related to banking.

I learned the accounting concept of banking, how a bank is operated, how the banking transactions and accounting are maintained, how the central banks control the money supply of the market and many more concepts from this course. A practical session was included in this course and I learned some basic transaction processes of bankers from these lab sessions.

In my third semester, this was a mandatory course and I had no alternatives other than taking this course. I came from a Science background until my undergraduate course and that’s why I had no prior accounting course experience. I was a bit dubious about this course in my university level as I did not know what it includes. But after I completed this course, I found myself very much interested in Banking procedure and automated banking.

      Topic 3: Language

“Describe a language other than English that you would like to learn”. You should say:

      • What the language is
      • Where it is spoken
      • What you think would be difficult
      • And what would be easy about learning the language and explain why you would like to learn it.

Learning a second language not only adds up your skills but also offers enormous benefits for your brain and personal growth. Additionally, being bilingual or multilingual expands your knowledge across the country’s border and provides you easy access to the understanding of other cultures. Therefore, besides English, Spanish sits high in my must-learn list due to its wide application and beautiful culture.

Needless to say, Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world and one of the six official languages used in United Nations conferences and statements. Spanish is spoken in most countries in South and Central America and in the US, over 50 million people are using Spanish either as their mother tongue or second language. As a result, knowing Spanish would absolutely widen your horizon, develop your sense of appreciation for Hispanic culture as well as transform your travel experience as who knows when you would bump into some Spanish friends on your adventure.

Many have said that Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn thanks to its phonetic pronunciation and its similarity with English, in terms of vocabulary. However, it’s easier said than done. No matter how simple and intriguing that may sound, without full commitment and self-discipline, being able to speak Spanish would be a far-fetched idea. Therefore, in order to meet my goal and not to get demotivated along the way, I would have to find a learning partner and we would fight this tough war together.

      Topic 4: Game

"Describe a game or sport you enjoy playing". You should say:

      • What kind of sport it is
      • Who you play it with
      • Where you play it
      • and explain why you enjoy playing it

I enjoy playing various kinds of brain games online. There are a number of different websites I visit on a regular basis in order to play these games by myself. The objective of the games is to exercise different areas of your brain so that you preserve and enhance your memory and also expand and develop your brain capacity.

The games are of various kinds. Some enable you to practice your verbal skills. Others test logical reasoning, spatial skills, and visual memory. I can keep track of my scores, so that each time I play, my goal is to do better than in the past – to outdo myself, so to speak. In addition, if I want, I can compare my scores to others who play online. This aspect is intriguing, but frankly, it doesn't interest me much. I don't regard this as a competition with anyone else. It is something I do simply to sharpen my mental abilities and improve myself.

In fact, one of my favorite games is supposed to be the best for brain fitness. It involves solving a number of simple math problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as quickly as possible. I really hope these games will enable me to preserve my intellect and my memory into old age.

      Topic 5: Environment

“Describe a polluted place”. You should say:

      • What the place is
      • What type of pollution it is/ are
      • Cause and effect of pollution
      • And explain how can this pollution be controlled

IELTS Fighter gợi ý những từ vựng nên sử dụng với topic Environment (Nguồn: YouTube – IELTS Fighter)

It is regrettable that Hanoi, where I’m living, is negatively affected by pollution and the major environmental problems it is facing are water pollution, air pollution, and noise pollution.

There are various reasons why this city is badly polluted. Firstly, due to modernization, more and more vehicles such as cars and motorbikes are used. This leads to an increase in exhaust emissions which contaminate the atmosphere, not to mention the rising level of noise pollution. Secondly, factories and industrial zones in the city have discharged a huge amount of untreated waste into rivers, causing death to many fish and other aquatic animals.

In fact, pollution makes people here less healthy, and some even suffer from life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer, skin cancer, and so on. Therefore, the government must deal with this problem right away. Cutting down on vehicle use is the best way to reduce air pollution and noise pollution. We can do this by encouraging people to use public transportation. Besides, those who litter should pay a heavy fine. Finally, I think the best solution is to raise awareness and educate people to protect the environment.

      Topic 6: Teacher

“Describe a teacher who has influenced you in your education”. You should say:

      • Where you met him/ her.
      • What subject s/he taught.
      • What was special about him /her
      • And explain why this place is interesting.

I consider myself lucky to get several very good teachers throughout my academic years. Among them, I'd like to talk about Mr. Smith who was an extraordinary teacher, a really good mentor and who has a great influence on my education.

I met Mr. Smith when I was in class 4 and he was our math teacher. Initially, we thought that he would be a moody teacher and we would have to be very polite in front of him. This impression came mostly because of his serious face and tidy dress-up. But soon we found that he is a very friendly person and teaches us very well. He never made things complicated and tried over and over again to explain something to us. He had a unique way of teaching. Seems like he would start an interesting story and later we would find that he would relate the math to the story. Thus everything we learned from him was interesting and that's why we remember most of the theory and techniques of math he taught us.

I'd say he has a great influence on my education because he made a very strong foundation in Mathematics. Later on, I studied Science and Mathematics was the most important subject. I have always been good at math and that' mainly because of Mr. Smith who had a major role in making the subject interesting to me. Before I learned math from Mr. Smith, my impression on math was not good and I considered mathematics to be a very difficult and uninteresting subject. But his teaching and influences changed my way of thinking about math and later on, math became my one the most favorite subject.

      Topic 7: Skill

“Describe a skill that takes a long time to learn”. You should say:

      • What type of skill it is
      • When you learn it
      • How you learn it
      • And explain why you learn it

Hi everyone, today I’m going to talk about a skill that takes a long time to learn, which is the playing instrument skill. Specifically here, I have the bass guitar. I originally started playing an instrument by playing the actual guitar here as you can see.

And then I slowly moved on to bass which I really love. But it’s not a very easy instrument to play. As you can see the string is really thick, so for a girl’s hand which is this little, it was really painful starting it, and then it took me a really long to slowly getting used to it.

After that, as you can see the reach-out of bass is also much wider than the reach-out of the guitar. It’s also something else to practice, and it took me quite a while to be honest. But then the sound of the bass is actually really sexy and it’s very attracting and I slowly got to really love it.

There’re a few things to practice on bass for a starter within a scale. My favorite scale is pentatonic scale, in Vietnamese, we call it “Ngu cung”. And then also practicing your fingers is obviously the most difficult. And playing bass you use two fingers to go like this instead of a pick like in the guitar.

There’s a lot to do with a bass. I usually spend around two hours every day even though I don’t like to say that my schedule is really tight, and I hate saying that I’m a busy person but I’m a little bit of a workaholic, and I spend two hours practicing my bass even though what I play is definitely not perfect yet but to be able to hear the bass sound every day is really soothing to me and that’s why I love the most about it. Even though I have been practicing bass for quite a few years now, I’m not confident to say that I’m good at it yet. So I just keep practicing every day, and I could hear that I slowly get better throughout.

So my recommendation to anyone who likes to learn any skill, from instrument skills to English skills, IELTS skills, any kinds of skills ever, the key point is to keep practicing, and also a very important point is that try to make it interesting so that you will never get bored. That’s pretty much everything you could do to get better, there’s no shortcut for it.

      Topic 8: Tourist Attraction

“Describe a tourist attraction that you have visited”. You should say:

      • What the attraction was
      • When you visited it
      • Why you went there
      • And say whether you enjoyed the visit or not

I’m going to tell you about the last time I visited the National Gallery in London. I guess that counts as a tourist attraction – it’s certainly always really busy and there is any number of tourists there. It’s popular I suppose because it’s completely free and that’s slightly unusual for a major art gallery nowadays. If you compare it with The Louvre in Paris, for example, that’s really pricey and you normally have to queue for hours at a time. The National Gallery is different not just because it’s free but you can walk right in without waiting.

I go there quite a lot, in fact, I try to go and visit it whenever I’m in London. I’m fascinated by art and art history and I just like to wander around and look at all the masterpieces that are on display there. Typically, I go for about an hour or so only because I lose concentration after a time.

Well, the last I went there was some time in December, just before Christmas I think. There was certainly a Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square just outside. I was in London to do some shopping and I decided to pop into the National to see if there was a new exhibition on. There wasn’t but I did see that there was a sensational Veronese exhibition planned for April this year. So what I did was just spend my time looking at some of Turner’s watercolors.

Did I enjoy it? Certainly, the National is one place I’ll never tire of and I’m sure that I will keep on going back there. It’s for me sort of one of the greatest art galleries in the world and I think it’s that’s why it’s such a popular tourist attraction.

      Topic 9: Situation

"Describe a situation when you didn’t have enough time". You should say:

      • When it was
      • What you tried to do or finish
      • Where you were
      • And explain why you didn’t have enough time

I’m gonna talk about the first time that I took the IELTS Test. I have got to (informal) admit that it was a nerve-racking and unforgettable experience. It happened when I was a senior at university.

To have an IELTS certificate with a minimum score required of at least 6.5 is one of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. To be honest, being a senior made me stressed out all the time. I had to work on my graduation thesis while doing my internship. So it actually left me little time to prepare for the test. Not until 2 weeks before the examination did I took the preparation more seriously. (take something seriously)

So basically what I did was just doing some reading and listening tests, practicing speaking on my own with my phone recording, and reading some writing sample essays without actually writing any. And on the test day, honestly, I freaked out. And I think you can probably tell why.

In the writing test, I focused too much on Task 1, plus I’m not much of a (not much of a) Mathematician, figures and numbers have always been my biggest fear so it took me too much time to finish the first task of the test. Moving on to the second one, I have to say that the questions were not too complicated to tackle, but when I looked at the clock, there were about 15 minutes left and as expected, I didn’t have enough time to complete the whole essay.

Topic 10: A Thing You Did

“Describe an interesting or unusual thing you did recently in your free time”. You should say:

      • What you did
      • When and where you did it
      • Who you did it with
      • And explain why you think it was interesting or unusual

IELTS Speaking Free timeTopic thú vị này sẽ giúp bạn có nhiều "đất" để nói hơn (Nguồn: britishcouncil.org)

In all seriousness, between school and the office where I am working as an intern, I barely have time for entertainment. Though, when I do, I take it seriously. Once or twice, I managed to get out of the city and indulged myself in secluded areas where Internet service and its distracting minions like social media and advertising emails ceased to exist. My latest sweet escape was my trip to Binh Ba island last summer.

Binh Ba was one of the four deserted, yet beautiful islands located in Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam due to little exposure to tourism. This, however, would change drastically within the next few years since Binh Ba had been drawing lots of attention thanks to positive feedback from those who had wandered there. I went to Binh Ba alone just to take a break from the fast-paced city life and to have time to contemplate myself, which I rarely did with people around. It had been an intriguing 2-day journey full of surprises.

That was the first time I traveled alone, first time riding on a speedboat, first time scuba diving and first time having dinner with a life jacket on my back and crystal clear water as my dining room. Additionally, the seafood here was a bomb which came in different kinds and varieties. People I met during my stay at a villager’s house were ultra-friendly and helpful, both locals and visitors who shared their stories as though you were their long-lost friend stopping by to catch up. And there was nothing better than enjoying great company over a nice meal and bonfire.

Binh Ba left an unforgettable impression on me where I learnt to appreciate precious moments with those I cared about and be grateful for whatever life had to offer. Life is tough but it would be lifeless without it toughness.
